Intrigued with people and what makes them tick

Before joining Kessels and Smit, I worked with various organisations in Southern Africa, Europe and the Middle East. This took me to some interesting places - managing emergency programmes in Iraq, visiting refugee camps in Iran and Afghanistan, lobbying UN officials in Geneva.  Providing mentoring support to South African exiles eventually brought me home to South Africa in 1995.  Working with conflict and in societies in transition, I became fascinated by the idea of how you can resolve issues where there is no trust, where there are no common values…

I am very much intrigued with people, and what makes them tick.  And every day I am inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of people in South Africa who are focused on solving problems, creating new opportunities and seeing possibilities – even in seemingly hopeless or desperate situations.  And a significant amount of my work involves coaching people - frequently supporting people make important transitions in their lives.

I work with various companies, NGOs and educational institutions to support innovative learning, while I also engage in research on social capital and knowledge management to find new ideas and support my own learning!  I write a blog on learning and social capital in South Africa that can be accessed at: markturpinsblog.blogspot.com
